Gouging

Spurred by growth in the number of projects with greater wall thicknesses, Deprest has invested in a 1000 A gouging machine

Gouging is a process that removes material from a workpiece. It is a form of grinding or controlled burning and is used to clean up the weld before the next pass on the joint. It is mainly suitable for thick materials (> 25 mm) that are welded by the automatic submerged arc welding machine. It is used to remove the first pass on a weld joint. This first pass often takes place under great stress, which could lead to weld defects. Alternatively, gouging is used to easily and quickly remove weld defects that run deep into the material.
