Stainless steel is known for its anti-corrosive characteristics. Which type do I use? In most cases this is quite obvious: 304 for indoor use and 316 for outside or in an agressive environment. Chlorine being enemy number 1 of stainless steel, especially 304, is a public secret. What do we do with more specific chemicals? Which stainless steel quality is more suitable for which type of chemical?

The corrosion charts of Outokumpu are quite complete.  See enclosed link.

Using these tables is quite simple: green means ok, red colour says that there is tendency to severe corrosion. Orange indicates corrosion but can still be used under certain circumstances.

Material indications are a little confusing: Cr-Ni = 304 and Cr-Ni-Mo = 316.
