A ‘dimple plate’, also called ‘pillow plate’ or ‘thermo plate’, can be used to make a boiler or tank double-walled and bring it to a given temperature, by either cooling or heating it.

A dimple plate consists of two plates which are spotwelded together (hence the term ‘dimple’ plate), often involving a thicker, rigid plate and a thinner plate that is later formed.

This plate can be cut, rolled and welded as usual. Once this plate has been welded on to the boiler, it is expanded under 60 barg pressure in order to obtain the double chamber.

The advantage of this manufacturing technique is that it is rather less expensive than others; however, the channel height obtained is rather limited compared with a traditional double-walled tank where a deeper chamber can be created.
